‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍Introduction

In recent years Sichuan Fine Arts Institute has graduated a number of outstandingyoung artists- Fan Yourong is just one of them.Parkview Green Art has the honor to witness her growth as an artist.

In terms of theme, Fan’s works mainly consist of two series: “The Girls” and “Outof the Corner of the Eye”. As the embodiment of her aesthetic pursuit, “TheGirls”, which has continued since 2008, featuring girls in the cities, givesexpression to their inner world and personalities to reveal the complexities oftheir sentiments underneath their seemingly peaceful look. The compositionalsimplicity and neatness, as well as undemonstrative coloring, adds to theformal purity and accuracy in the expression of the mind.

‍‍

In 2015 the new pieces in this series, attesting to the great progress in her ‍‍art, will surely bring the public more possibilities and give them more expectations. On the basis of her characteristic style, there is a touch of theclassic icon painting. In addition, we find considerable change in coloring. Whileheightening the sense of space, the artist has more control over the mood inthe painting, so it does not permeate aimlessly any more and is more oriented.

‍‍“Out ofthe Corner of the Eye” features mainly landscape and objects. Since 2011 Fanhas been referring to the landscapes and the images that we usually neglect orput into oblivion in the hope of exploring the aesthetic potential of image lyingunder the cover of indifference to social landscape. Such landscapes and visual experience call forth our reflections about the changes and development in thisperiod of social transformation, such as the concurrent sense of speed andsense of illusion, and the problems in rural-urban fringe zones that are oftenneglected or closed over… Her cold and strict aesthetic logic provides theaudience with a special perspective to view the all but too familiar landscape.A language, emphasizing the spiritual dimension, is adopted to build a moresober and more serious sociological spectacle. The new subject matter goes inhand with the new dimension in the pictorial language. The blurred colors, theobscure form, the giddy light and other techniques to create visual effect alljoin to strengthen the sense of fragmentation, instant, and indeterminationgiven by the landscape we get “from the corner of the eye”.

‍‍As an artist, Fan wishesthat her works can be a vehicle for social information and reflection ratherthan something merely for sentiment and pictorial vocabulary.  Her piety to pictorial qualities and detailedtreatment lend to the two series a visual dimension that is fine, subtle, andhighly purified. Keeping alive the concern for history and reality based onindividuality and humanity that is particular to the academic school, shestresses the expression of the individual sentiment and cultural concepts, aswell as the connection between the subject matter and the real life experience. The breakthroughs in her aesthetics are sure to open up new possibilities, sowe have every reason to expect from her growing mastery while depicting thesentiment in the inner world.
