Parkview Green Art Gallery is pleased to present the contemporary art exhibition Explorer Preface, which will exhibit paintings, installations, sculptures and documentation by the artists Huang Lan, Guo Yaguan and Qiu Shan. The exhibition revolves around the topic of “Preface”; the space of the gallery is turned into a tunnel characterized by visual ambiguity which brings the viewers into a mysterious dimension. Since the Middle Ages, people have been wondering: is it the object that contains the concept, or is it the concept that gives life to the object? In this exhibition, the three artists will investigate this complex concept through their inexplicable experiences.

The role of the artist is to interpret what is happening now, what happened in the past and what might happen in the future. The criterion to assess whether an art piece touches the heart of the audience is whether the artwork is able to reawaken mysterious emotions that lie in all humans’ instinct. By exploring the relationship between the matter and the finished objects, the exhibition creates a grotesque atmosphere which establishes a harmonious dialogue with the surrounding space of the mall while encouraging people to think out of the box. The selected works reveal a certain kind of hidden dimension. Is this world really hidden? How does it slip out of the artist's eyes? What is it about? How to understand it? How to convey such questions to the audience has become the aim and value of this exhibition.

The work of Huang Lan creates a world that seems to be detached from reality. The puppets in her work remind actors on a stage; this visual estrangement also evokes life and death. The visual repertoire is composed by images of girls and mermaids combined with organs and body elements that convey emotions through facial expressions, body language, mouth shapes, and eyes. The pathos and emotionality in the Huang Lan’s works are reinforced by the introduction of elements such as branches, petals, thorns, bubbles, nets, beads. Her recent work, titled The Feature Movie, brings the viewers into a mysterious dimension through the subtle combination of different scenes.

The core of Guo Yaguan's works is the reconstruction of “field” and “ritual”. The work is intended to stimulate viewers' inherent sensory experience with a strong visual effect in contrast with reality, so as to help them find the self-awareness that transcends human’s dimension. The work Your Ark Is Parked in One of My Unknown Dreams was created in Tengchong, Yunnan. This unique environment in the southwest of China stimulates imagination and creativity.

Qiu Shan's paintings present an unfathomable symbolic world that transcends real life. His works often depict improbable scenes where the connection between the different visual elements of the image loses any rational connotation. The relationship between the images is blurred and the pictorial composition is characterized by a silent, obscure, fascinating, and fearful atmosphere. This ambiguity reflects the complexity of psychological time and brings a veil of mystery to the work.

The exhibition will open at 4:00 pm on May 11th, and will run until June 15th.
